THE nation’s top cop has defended Perak police’s rule regarding election campaigns, saying it applies to candidates nationwide.
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said it is the norm during the general election for candidates to apply for permits before holding ceramah during the campaign period.
“There are grouses by certain irresponsible people. We have never stopped any candidate from campaigning, as long as they follow the law as stated under Section 24B(3) of the Elections Act 1954,” he told reporters at a special 14th general election press conference at Bukit Aman today.
It was reported that Perak police chief Hasnan Hassan had said candidates must apply for permits 10 days in advance before campaigning in their constituencies.
Fuzi said only candidates or their agents within their respective constituencies can apply for permits under Section 24B(3) of the Elections Act, whereby there is no time frame set to apply for permits.
“However, for anyone who wants to hold a rally, they must notify (police), as per Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, 10 days in advance.”
He said candidates can invite anyone to campaign in their constituencies, provided that the names are listed in the approved permits.
“Claims that there are laws to stop candidates from campaigning or holding ceramah… are untrue, as Section 24B(3) of the Elections Act gives space and opportunity to anyone who campaigns in their constituencies, as listed in the approved permits.” – April 28, 2018.
