CARETAKER Prime Minister Najib Razak will be facing a four-cornered fight in his Pekan seat, which he has held since 1976.

Returning officer Md Yusli Ibrahim Mohd Yunus announced that all candidates were eligible to contest.

“The Election Commission received four nominations… I am satisfied and I announce that all the candidates are qualified to contest,” he said when announcing the candidates.

The other three are Bersatu’s Zahid Mat Arip, a parachute candidate contesting under the PKR flag, PAS Pekan commissioner Ahiatudin Daud and independent candidate Abdul Kadir Haji Sainudin.

The two state seats in the constituency, Pulau Manis and Peramu Jaya, will be contested by Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and PAS.

The announcement was met with cheers from both BN and PAS supporters who easily outnumbered the PH supporters.

The Pekan seat has traditionally been contested by PAS but it was taken over by PKR, who fielded Fariz Musa in the 13th general election. Najib defeated Fariz by 51,278 votes. – April 28, 2018.
