DEWAN Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul said youth must gather resources and talent to ensure Malaysia keeps up with the major countries in the region.

He said in light of Asean’s shifting economic landscape, Malaysian youth, particularly those studying in China, must come home after acquiring knowledge to lead and support national development.

“I advise all students, after your studies, don’t think of coming back (to Malaysia) and start looking for jobs. Instead, come back here and create jobs… Lead the country, become entrepreneurs, make connections and enhance your potential,” he said during his lecture to Malaysian students at Beijing’s Tsinghua University today.

During his visit to the varsity, Johari met with Tsinghua University president Wang Xiqin.

Johari said Asean countries, particularly Malaysia, need more investment in education and talent development.

He said universities should offer courses such as sustainable development, technology, and entrepreneurship that correspond with future economic requirements.

“Young people are today’s change-makers and tomorrow’s leaders. They are leading the social change, advancing innovation, and influencing the future of our country, so young Malaysians, do take this opportunity,” he said.

Johari is leading a parliament delegation to Beijing on a four-day official trip to China’s capital until September 28, at the behest of Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress chairman Zhao Leji following a meeting in Kuala Lumpur on May 18. – Bernama, September 25, 2023.
