THE Attorney-General’s Chambers has denied that it conducts politically motivated, selective prosecutions of offenders.

In a statement, Attorney-General Idrus Harun said any decision to charge an individual is based on evidence obtained from investigations.

He said it was not done at the insistence of any party.

“Such decisions are made based on evidence in the investigation papers and not in the favour of anyone, ensuring that victims, witnesses, accused and the public obtain appropriate justice in accordance with the jurisdiction of the attorney-general provided under Article 145(3) of the Federal Constitution,” the AG’s statement read.

“If there is strong evidence that any individual has committed an offence under any provision of the law, that individual will be prosecuted by the AGC based on the law – regardless of the status and background of the person being prosecuted,” he added.

The statement followed the opposition’s contention that the government was using lawful ways to persecute its opponents.

In a Facebook post today, Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said Putrajaya was using legal instruments to “pressure its political opponents”.

The Bersatu president’s post came after caretaker Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor was charged with sedition yesterday.

Muhyiddin believed Sanusi’s arrest was against the unity government’s promises of reform.

“This is clearly against the ‘reformasi’ promises that they have championed, which include abolishing the Sedition Act,” the Pagoh lawmaker said.

Sanusi is accused of making a seditious comment regarding the appointment of the Selangor menteri besar, inciting discontent by it.

In a separate court, Sanusi was charged with making seditious remarks in relation to the king in questioning if the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had indeed decreed that a unity government be formed after the November general election.

Both offences were allegedly committed at the same ceramah in Simpang 4, Taman Selayang Mutiara-Kampung Bendahara, Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, at 11pm, on July 11. – July 19, 2023.
