THE Kelantan government will dissolve its state legislative assembly on June 22 to make way for the state elections.
Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob said the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, had already given his consent for the dissolution.
“Today I announce the dissolution of the Kelantan assembly’s 14th term.
“I approached the Sultan of Kelantan to request permission to dissolve the state assembly according to the state constitution, which provides that the sultan can dissolve the state assembly.
“Therefore, the Sultan of Kelantan has agreed that the state assembly be dissolved on June 22,” he said at a press conference.
Ahmad said state government will send the dissolution notice to the Election Commission (EC) for further action and this has to be processed within 60 days.
“It is up to the EC to take action and the notice of the dissolution will be sent as soon as possible,” he said.
Kelantan is comprised of 45 state constituencies.
In the 14th general election in 2018, PAS won 37 seats and continued to run the state administration, which it had since 1990, while BN has seven seats and Bersatu one.
Kelantan, along with Negri Sembilan, Selangor, Penang, Kedah and Terengganu will hold their polls this year. – June 14, 2023.
