The Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission has confirmed arresting Muhyiddin Yassin at 1pm today and that he will be brought to the Kuala Lumpur courts tomorrow to face charges.

MACC said the former prime minister was arrested after he turned up to give a statement to the commission this morning.

The commission also confirmed that the investigation on Muhyiddin was related to the Jana Wibawa project and related issues.

“The MACC has also obtained permission from the Attorney General’s Chambers to charge Muhyiddin at the Kuala Lumpur Court on March 10, 2023,” the commission said in a statement.

MACC sources told The Malaysian Insight that Muhyiddin is likely to be released on bail later today and “he has to appear in court tomorrow morning”.

Muhyiddin, who is the Perikatan Nasional chairman, will face a number of charges in accordance with Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act and Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Earlier, Pahang Bersatu chief and Indera Mahkota MP Saifuddin Abdullah told reporters outside MACC headquarters that Muhyiddin is expected to be released upon questioning.

MACC is currently investigating allegations that chosen contractors deposited RM300 million in Bersatu’s account before the November general election.

Muhyiddin has denied this, saying that he is a victim of political slander by those intending to smear his reputation. He has also threatened to sue his accusers.

Last week, former Bersatu information chief and Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Segambut Bersatu deputy chief Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad were charged with corruption.

They are alleged to have collected funds from the awarding of projects during Muhyiddin’s tenure as the eighth prime minister. – March 9, 2023.
