AMANAH is eyeing an extra state seat or two, as it prepares to go into the upcoming Selangor polls, mobilisation bureau director Mohd Sany Hamzan said.

Against expectations, party incumbents retained all its seats in Selangor.

Party chief Mohamad Sabu retained Kota Raja, former health minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (Kuala Selangor) and Wanita Amanah chief Aiman Athirah Sabu (Sepang) and Sany (Hulu Langat).

The Hulu Langat MP said the party – part of the ruling Pakatan Harapan pact – has held several meetings with their new allies Barisan Nasional (BN) on the elections.

“In the last state elections we contested 10 seats and won eight. We are going to contest again in all the 10 seats.

“We also hope to get one or two extra seats to fulfil the trust given to us in the Selangor polls,” he told The Malaysian Insight in an interview.

Last month, PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said PH can win 47 out of the 56 state seats in Selangor should the next state elections be held in June.

He said although PAS and Perikatan Nasional (PN) had put up an impressive performance in the November general election, it would not be easy for the opposition coalition to wrest Selangor from PH.

PH, which rules Selangor, has control over 40 of the 56 seats in the state assembly.

Umno/BN has five seats, while PN has five seats through Bersatu (4) and PAS (1). The remainder of the seats were won by Pejuang (3), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (2) and Warisan (1).

Six states that will be holding their polls in the middle of this year are PN-held Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, and PH’s Selangor, Penang and Negri Sembilan.

Sany, who is also the Taman Templer state assemblyman in Selangor, said seat talks are still ongoing between PH and BN, especially on seats currently held by PN.

“It will be discussed whether PH and BN will field candidates to contest in these PN-held seats.

“As for Amanah, we will contest all our 10 seats.

“In Selangor, our election machinery, together with other parties, are ready to face the polls, be it in June or July.”

When asked if PAS/PN can emulate their November election success in the Selangor polls, Sany said the playing field in Selangor was level.

He also said Amanah wants to see a clean fight without lies and racial issues being played up.

“Blaming the Chinese, Indians and other races is not right. If you don’t like us, then you can curse us, but don’t lie.

“For example, before GE15, they (PN) said if PH wins Putrajaya, then Islam will be replaced with Christianity.

“We have been in federal power for three months now, and Malays are still going to the mosques, performing prayers, children are going to tahfiz schools, women still wearing tudung, so what’s the issue?

“Don’t scare the others. This is not right. If they want to fight, do it with facts. Enough is enough,” he told PN parties Bersatu and PAS. – March 9, 2023.
