STREAMING service Viu stopped broadcasting the controversial “Mentega Terbang” movie on February 27, the platform tweeted.

Viu said it did not intend to offend any quarters and decided to pull the film from its streaming service.

The platform added that it appreciated the views given on the movie.

Meanwhile, Free Malaysia Today quoted the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) as saying it had no authority to censor movies and television dramas as they do not fall under its purview.

“Section 3(3) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 states that the censorship of movies or dramas on streaming platforms does not fall under the jurisdiction of the MCMC,” said MCMC.

MCMC added that it was committed to working with the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) to monitor any content that went against the teachings of Islam.

“MCMC will always cooperate and provide technical support to the state religious department to conduct investigations under the Shariah Criminal Offences Act,” it said.

The movie, available only online from January 19, attracted controversy for touching on the differences and similarities of the major religions in Malaysia.

On Thursday, Religious Affairs Minister Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said Jakim would meet the production team of the movie.

Na’im said Jakim had reviewed the film’s content and found it went against the Islamic creed.

The Film Censorship Board meanwhile said it had no jurisdiction over the locally produced independent film as it was only released online. – March 4, 2023.
