A CIVIL society group has appealed to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to seriously consider its proposal for a race and and religious hate law, after a Shah Alam High Court earlier this week dismissed its appeal to commence private prosecution against two Muslim converts for allegedly insulting the faiths and religious practices of non-Muslims.

Peter John Jaban, deputy president of the Global Human Rights Federation, said a memorandum on the proposed law was submitted to the prime minister on February 17.

Jaban said the dismissal of the appeal showed alleged double standards in the prosecution of religious provocateurs.

“The law should apply to all Malaysians equally, no double standards or without favouring any particular race or religion,” he said.

Equal protection, he added, is enshrined in article 8 of the Federal Constitution and in the Rukun Negara.

Jaban said Anwar had, when tabling the revised Budget 2023 last Friday, spoken on racial, religious insults and provocations.

But he mentioned nothing on how it was to be tackled, Jaban added. – March 2, 2023.
