ONLY one company is allowed to import eggs from India to overcome the shortage in Malaysia, Agriculture and Food Security Minister said Mohamad Sabu told parliament today.

That is also only a short-term measure, he said.

He said the ministry allowed to import fresh, white eggs from India, of grade E and each weighing 50-55g.

“The company was given the permission to import eggs from India based on its experience in exporting eggs from India to Qatar to fulfil demand during the 2022 World Cup,” he told Wan Saiful Wan Jan (Tasik Gelugor-PN).

Mohamad said 13.4 billion eggs were produced in Malaysia in 2018, 10.9 billion in 2019, 12.9 billion in 2020, 13.6 billion in 2021 and 13.3 billion in 2022.

In the first two months of the year, the local egg industry produced 2.4 billion eggs.
