IT is the Najib government that has increased the national debt to its present level said Dr Mahathir Mohamad today.

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said there was no basis to Najib’s claim that the opposition would increase the national debt to RM1.1 trillion if it came to power.

“The national debt went up during Najib’s tenure as prime minister. Our work is to reduce the debt.

“What is the basis for his claim? When I was in government, was the national debt this high?” he asked, rebutting Najib.

The Najib, who is also finance minister, had said today Malaysia would be RM1.1 trillion in debt if PH took over the federal government.

He said the opposition pact’s election manifesto, which promised to abolish the goods and services tax (GST) and existing tolls, would plunge the nation into RM416 billion further in debt on top of the existing RM685 billion debt.

“If that is all taken into account, the national debt will increase and inflate to RM416 billion, with the existing debt, it becomes RM1 trillion.

“The opposition wants to claim that we are increasing the national debt, but their manifesto is even more drastic.

“This will be the debts that we will inherit and you guys will be the ones who are going to be paying back after this,” Najib told students at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) which was broadcast on Facebook. – March 13, 2018.

  • I think we have misunderstood Najib’s expiation about the national debt. He was preparing PH to inherit RM 1.1t debt when Pakatan takes over.

  • GST is an income, not a debt. No GST no income, that is what will happen. Saying no GST results in higher debt. This is absurd!

  • Mahatir is instrumental in launching Ketuanan Melayu and Islamization. If he returns as PM - he, his family members and cronies will curi makan worse than Najib and the 40 thieves.
