Anwar to be released June 8, but still subject to change

JAILED opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will be released on June 8,2018, but it could still change depending on whether he violates prison rules, the Home Ministry said.

In a written parliamentary reply dated March 6, the Home Ministry said the calculation was based on the Prison Act and the Prisons Regulations, and Anwar’s release date fell on June 10 (Sunday) but he could be released on Friday, which is a working day.

“However, the sentence and release date of a prisoner can still change if the prisoner violates prison rules and it leads to the revocation of the remission under the Prison Rules,” it said.

The ministry was responding to a question by Gooi Hsiao Leung (PKR-Alor Setar), who asked the ministry to confirm Anwar’s release date based on the one-third remission of his sentence.

Anwar is serving a five-year jail sentence after he was convicted of sodomising his aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, in June 2008.

In June, Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said Anwar’s jail time could be extended if his statements were issued without the approval of the director-general of the Prisons Department.

“If Anwar’s statements were relayed through third parties and were not approved by the Prisons Department, then it is an offence that can affect the jail period,” Jazlan said.  – March 12, 2018.
