THE search and rescue (SAR) operation to look for nine victims still missing from a Batang Kali campsite landslide last Friday entered its third day this morning.

SAR was suspended at 4am today and resumed at about 9am.

Selangor JBPM deputy director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail said 135 of its personnel were on duty as of this morning in the search for the missing nine campers.

As of 9pm yesterday, 61 out of the 94 victims have been found, with 24 confirmed dead.

In the landslide at 2.42am on Friday, a section of a slope 300m long and 70m high came crashing down onto a campsite at the farm.

SAR was then launched following an emergency call and rescuers arrived at the scene within minutes.

Yesterday Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said the chances of finding more survivors of the Batang Kali landslide were thin.

Norazam said the search-and-rescue operation is in its second day and he does not rule out the possibility that remaining victims have run out of oxygen after being buried.

“Based on a rough observation, the chances (of survival) are very slim.

“But if they are stuck in between trees and rocks where there are openings, they might be able to breathe,” he said.

Multiple agencies including the Emergency Medical Rescue Service from the Sentosa, Ampang, Pandan, Kota Anggerik, Kajang dan Andalas Fire and Rescue stations, as well as the Special Tactical Operation and Rescue Team, were involved in the SAR.

Around seven K9 tracker dog units were also deployed for the rescue operation. –  December 18, 2022.
