DAP MP offers to help CID chief get money back, but after declaration

A DAP lawmaker has offered to organise a crowdfunding effort to help Bukit Aman CID chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd raise funds to retrieve money in a frozen bank account in Australia, on the condition that he declares the source of his assets.

Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching said Wan Ahmad must first prove that the Aus$320,000 (RM970,000) that was seized by the Australian Federal Police last week on suspicion that they are dubious funds, is really clean and from legitimate sources.

“It is the utmost importance of him to do so in order to clear his reputation completely.

“Yes, he still needs to fork out some money for his travelling and accommodation expenses to face the inquiry. But isn’t his reputation worth more than that,” Teo said at a press conference in Parliament today.

“And if the money seized by Australian authorities is really meant for his children’s education fund in Australia, now that the money is being frozen, how are his children is going to continue their study in Australia?” she said.

Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun denied any wrongdoings on Wan Ahmad’s part, and insisted the reason his subordinate did not retrieve the money is that the cost to do so is too high.

“Of course, if given the chance, he would want his money back. It is his right. However, he thinks that the fees (he has to pay) and the process might cost him more,” said Fuzi during a press conference at Bukit Aman yesterday.

On Monday, Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) opened investigation papers regarding the case after a whistleblower lodged a report.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Paul Low had told The Malaysian Insight that MACC should investigate Wan Ahmad instead of waiting for a report to be lodged against him.

Low, who oversees the country’s fight against graft, said the case appeared to “improper conduct”.

Fuzi, in a statement on Saturday, had said the Aus$320,000 seized from Wan Ahmad’s Australian account was from the sale of his house in Shah Alam. – March 7, 2018.
