PUTRAJAYA will unveil a new mechanism to regulate the market prices of eggs tomorrow, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.

He said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu will announce the new mechanism.

“This will reduce dependency on cartels. We hope that supplies will be sufficient in the market and as announced earlier, the price of eggs can be reduced,” he said today after chairing a special cabinet meeting.

Earlier this year, poultry breeders had complained that the rising costs of operation had forced them to reduce their livestock, causing the disruption in supply of chicken eggs in the markets of several states.

Following this, then agriculture and food industries minister Ronald Kiandee announced an increase in subsidies for chicken breeders and chicken egg producers.

Currently, the subsidy, which will continue till the end of the month, is at a rate of RM0.80 per kg for chickens and RM0.08 per egg.

The maximum retail price of grade A chicken eggs has been set at 45 sen each, grade B (43 sen) and grade C (41 sen) in the peninsula while for Langkawi, Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, the maximum prices of chicken and eggs vary, depending on the zones and districts. – December 5, 2022.
