THE Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry has given its assurance that despite shortages reported in several areas, there is sufficient supply of chicken eggs throughout the country.
Its secretary-general Azman Mohd Yusof said the ministry was continuously monitoring the supply of chicken eggs in the market and is also working with several other ministries, among them the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (Mafi).
He added that to date no complaints had been received regarding chicken eggs being hoarded by any party. He also said that legal action would be taken against those who are found to be shoring up supplies.
“I have also been in touch with the Mafi secretary-general and our officers are having technical discussions with several ministries today to ensure that there is an adequate supply of eggs in the consumer market,” Azman said.
He was speaking to reporters after inspecting the supply of food items at a supermarket in conjunction with the Deepavali Festival Maximum Price Scheme that is effective October 20 to 26.
Meanwhile, Azman said that the lack of supply of chicken eggs in specific area was probably due to problems with payment, hard-to-reach locations, as well as transport and logistic issues which disrupt delivery.
He also expressed hope that all industry players would cooperate with the government to ensure an adequate supply of food to the market at reasonable prices ahead of Deepavali. – Bernama, October 20, 2022.
