GERAKAN Tanah Air (GTA) will be using Pejuang’s symbol to contest in the coming general election, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.
The former prime minister said that this was due to GTA not being registered as an official political coalition.
“The (former) government has not approved GTA and parliament has been dissolved.
“So, we have decided to contest under the Pejuang banner using its symbol and flags. Pejuang will replace GTA,” he said in Putrajaya today.
He added, however, that Putra—who would be contesting in Kelantan—would use their own logo.
“They (Putra) will be contesting with their logo only in Kelantan, but for other states they will use the Pejuang symbol.”
On August 4, Dr Mahathir formed GTA that comprised Pejuang, Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), Barisan Jemaah Islamiah Se-Malaysia and Parti Perikatan India Muslim Nasional.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced the dissolution of parliament to make way for the general election.
He said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had given his royal assent for the dissolution of the current parliament term, which was set to end in July.
A general election must be held within 60 days after the dissolution of parliament.
Dr Mahathir clarified that just because they (GTA) were using the Pejuang symbol, it did not mean all the candidates were from Pejuang.
“They (candidates) are not all from the party, but from the GTA coalition.
“We have also agreed on the seat allocation and the candidate selection will be done by the respective party leaders.”
He said that for GE15 the coalition would be fielding more than 120 candidates, including for Sabah.
“Our leaders and our candidates are clean as they are not involved in any scandals.
“We will stick to the rule of law and respect the democratic system in the country.” – October 11, 2022.
