NG Foo Mun and the 220 dogs in his shelter are in dire need of aid.

The 65-year-old, who opened the shelter in 2013, has been struggling to feed his dogs as the costs escalate.

Ng told The Malaysian Insight he became a full-time volunteer at an animal shelter after he retired from a newspaper company. He later rented a house in Sungai Buloh to start his own animal shelter before moving to Bestari Jaya.

He has rescued many injured dogs and cats but has lately struggled to make ends meet as inflation hits.

“My expenses have gone up 30%. I need at least RM18,000 a month to sustain this shelter,” said Ng, who runs the MunMun Furry Sanctuary.

He said he has also to pay his workers.

“My two workers were demanding more because they know foreign workers are in demand. So I had to increase their salaries.”

Ng said he receives donations but they are not consistent.

“If I don’t get any funding, I will have to dip into my savings.

“I will do whatever it takes to make sure this shelter sustains and my dogs remain safe here,” he said.

Ng said he is unable to to rescue more dogs because of the lack of funds.

“Back then when things were cheaper, I would rescue all dogs which I came across and bring them back to the shelter but now I have to make sure I would be able to feed them as well.

“I have over 220 dogs now in my shelter and with the current financial situation, I will not be able to expand anymore,” said Ng

He is grateful to the land owner for renting him the 1.5ha plot of land for just RM1.

“The landlord is a big animal lover.”

Ng said many dogs are abandoned simply because their owners are irresponsible.
