RAPPER Namewee was released today from IPD Dang Wangi after being remanded for four days over his controversial Chinese New Year music video posted on YouTube.

Namewee who was wearing a grey short sleeve shirt with his trademark snowcap left the station in a red colour Proton Exora.

He was remanded on Thursday after giving his statement to Bukit Aman over his music video, which led to angry groups lodging reports.

Namewee who was released at 1.50pm had managed to evade reporters and photographers who were waiting at the entrance of the police station.

Last week, Namewee had said he went to the police headquarters to give his statement as he believed in the country’s justice system.

“I came to the police headquarters as I am not afraid and I believe in the country’s justice system.

“I thank everyone for their support,” he said in a brief post, which was published with a picture of the controversial artiste saluting beside the Jalan Bukit Aman street sign.

In his Like a Dog music video, Namewee sang that dogs in different countries have different barks, and while American dogs go “woof woof” and Indonesian dogs go “bow wow”, Malaysian dogs go “mari mari wang wang” (come come money money).

He was accompanied by background dancers in dog masks, who moved provocatively and scatter money to the beat of the music.

Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, denied insulting Islam in the music video, which was released to coincide with the CNY celebrations.

The rapper said the music video served only entertainment purposes, and that he had no intention of disrespecting any religion or race. – February 26, 2018.

  • Only people who are hurt for obvious reason make report over a "video" which is not controversial at all.

  • So he was released without a charge. There can be no charge. Can Namewee sue the government for locking him up for four days?
