Muda prepared for all eventualities in Syed Saddiq trial, says info chief

MUDA is ready to face any prospects if its president, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, is found guilty in his ongoing corruption trial, the party’s information chief Luqman Long said.

However, the party refuses to speculate on the Muar MP’s trial and has faith in the judicial system.

“We do not want to be a party that is led by someone who has been found guilty of corruption,” Luqman told The Malaysian Insight.

“However, while the trial is ongoing, we will leave it to the courts to decide.”

Syed Saddiq is facing four charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT) and money laundering in relation to RM1 million belonging to Bersatu’s youth wing.

The former Bersatu youth wing chief faces imprisonment of up to 10 years with whipping, and a fine, for the CBT charges, and a maximum imprisonment of 15 years and a fine for the money laundering charges.

“We have other plans if Syed Saddiq is found guilty. We are firm in our stance in identifying individuals with good intentions and integrity to be leaders,” said Luqman.

He said Syed Saddiq has been transparent during his trial and has explained his position to the party leaders.

“The court case is not a hindrance. For me, the president is transparent during his trial. Every time there is a hearing, he will inform us what is happening,” he said.

“Syed Saddiq, in numerous meetings, has explained his position in the case. This is a political trial.

“His position is that this is not an issue and I have been informed that the president’s office is confident about the integrity and transparency of the judiciary.”

Luqman, who is a lawyer, is of the view that the trial will not interfere with Muda’s focus in the next general election.

“This will not affect Muda in the 15th general election because a person is innocent until proven guilty,” he said.

“If the president is found guilty, then we will take the necessary steps.

“Now we are focused on the trial itself. We will not speculate but place our trust in the judicial system to come to a right and fair decision for all.”

He said Muda’s main goal now is to ensure that the party, which was formed last December, is the alternative choice for the people.

“When the general election comes, we want to be the main choice for the people,” he added. – August 7, 2022.
