A BERSATU leader confirmed discussing a proposal whether Perikatan Nasional (PN) should withdraw its support for Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

However, no decision was made at the supreme council meeting last week whether to withdraw or to continue supporting the government helmed by the Umno vice-president, Dr Muhammad Faiz Naaman said.

The Bersatu supreme council member told The Malaysian Insight that the meeting only discussed the possible scenarios that could unfold in either decisions.

“There was no decision or stand taken at the supreme council meeting. We only discussed what the implications could be, whatever decision we might make,” he said.

Faiz was responding to reports that PN is expected to withdraw its support for Ismail over alleged breaches of the memorandum of understanding where Bersatu agreed to support the appointment of the Bera MP as the ninth prime minister in August last year.

He also clarified that some of what was reported is inaccurate and only hearsay.

“It’s not correct. The supreme council has not made any decision,” Faiz added.

Media reports linked talk of PN’s intention to withdraw support to Ismail’s failure to appoint a deputy prime minister from Bersatu, a condition stipulated in the MOU.

Ismail was to have met a PN delegation to discuss the alleged breaches of the agreement but the meeting was called off at the last minute.

Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, Bersatu supreme council member Mohamed Azmin Ali, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan and PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar were to have been in the delegation.

The cancellation of the discussion had caused PN to lose patience with Ismail, it was reported.

Apart from the appointment of the deputy prime minister, reports also said Ismail was to have discussed with Bersatu leaders on the date of the 15th general election. – August 6, 2022.
