CLOSING down vernacular schools will not guarantee the success of national schools, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

The main issue, he said, is to improve the quality of government schools.

  • Yes Tun, you are right. I studied in the national school system from Std 1 to Form 6. I think I did ok. To revamp the national school system, the Govt should perhaps consider recruiting foreign teachers from say the UK, Aust, NZ or USA. Teachers from Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand too can be recruited to provide diversity and expertise. Having foreign teachers in the system will spur the adoption of a new mindset and relief some pressure on our local teachers who will need to adapt too.

There must be a radical overhaul of the learning syllabus to incorporate relevant and productive subjects and less emphasis on religion for instance. Emphasis must also be given to learning of multiple languages as we are now in a well connected universe.

I am confident all students especially the Malay students will be able live up to the challenge and they will reap the rewards later in life.

  • Just revert back to the school system in the 1970s and 1980s. We have produced many smart professionals of all races. The country had less social integration problem. The Chinese and Tamil schools were not removed and yet we integrated well when we became adults. We had a good thing going but the Islamic agenda has changed everything. I do not agree totally with Mahathirs views.
