‘Amy and Alex’ duo secure RM40,000 for bail through crowdfunding

A SUM of RM40,000 has been raised through crowdfunding for bail for a couple facing charges involving a stand-up comedy performance that allegedly insulted Islam, Free Malaysia Today reports.

The crowdfunding was organised by legal rights group Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), lawyer R. Sivaraj who is representing the woman, Siti Nuramira Abdullah, told FMT.

Siti Nuramira, whose allegedly offending performance saw her remove her hijab and baju kurung to reveal a miniskirt and spaghetti-strap top while telling the audience she was a Muslim who had memorised 15 chapters of the Quran, needed RM20,000 to post bail.

She has been charged with under section 298A of the penal code with causing disharmony among the Muslim community.

Her partner, Alexander Navin Vijayachandran, also needed the same amount to post bail after being charged under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for uploading insulting content by posting the video of Siti Nuramira’s performance on the internet.

Sivaraj said Siti Nuramira and Alexander’s bailors are travelling from other states to go to the courts in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur this morning to post bail, and hoped they would make it in time.

The couple have pleaded not guilty to their charges.

Siti Nurmanira’s performance at an open-mic session was at the Crackhouse Comedy Club on June 4, but the video clip of her was only posted on June 16. – July 18, 2022.
