NEWLY elected PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli’s anti-big tent team saw a sweeping victory at the party’s central leadership committee (CLC) elections, winning 13 out of 20 seats.

The 13 are from a list of 26 candidates Rafizi had endorsed in the run-up to the CLC elections yesterday.

While former education minister Maszlee Malik topped the list with 1,091 votes, the next three rungs were taken up by people on Rafizi’s list.

The three were Johor Baru MP Akmal Nasir (956 votes), Permatang Pauh youth chief Romli Ishak (878) and former deputy prime minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail’s political secretary Fahmi Zainal (817).

Other Rafizi-endorsed candidates who won were Nurin Aina Surip, Lee Chean Chung, Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, Gerald Hans Isaac, Simon Ooi Tze Min, Wong Chen, Raiyan Abdul Rahim, Tan Kar Hing, Zahir Hassan and Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik.

One of the biggest surprises was the entry of Hans Issac, who had recently lost the Ampang division chief race.

“Big tent” refers to a strategy promoted by some in Pakatan Harapan (PH) as well as president Anwar Ibrahim and his supporters to collaborate with other non-PH parties to ensure Barisan Nasional does not return to power in the coming general elections.

Rafizi, however, is strongly against it, saying PKR and the opposition need a new narrative to win back voters disillusioned by party-hopping, frequent changes in government, and the weak economy.

The full list of CLC members is as follows:

Maszlee Malik (1,091 votes)

Akmal Nasir (956 votes)

Romli Ishak (878 votes)

Fahmi Zainol (817 votes)

Mohd Yahya Mat Sahri (804 votes)
