ABOUT 60 Amanah members and supporters staged a peaceful protest today against the government’s inability to curb price hikes.

The rally started after the Friday prayers near the Kampung Baru mosque in Kuala Lumpur.

Among those present were Amanah communications director Khalid Abdul Samad, vice-president Adly Zahari and Selangor exco member Izham Hashim.

“This has to stop. The rising prices of goods are burdening the people more and more as the days go by,” said Adly.

The protesters held up placards that read “BN = Barang Naik” and “Kembalikan subsidi barang makan”.

Adly said the government should have fixed all these problems during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The government was given RM4.4 billion for subsidies, but where is it? Hence, we are protesting today,” he said.

“We hope the people of Malaysia will change the government and realise that we can lead the country even better.”

The crowd dispersed at 2.30pm.

Starting today, the subsidy for bottled palm oil cooking oil of 1kg, 2kg, 3kg and 5kg has ended.

Besides this, the government has set a new retail ceiling price for chicken at RM9.40 per kg, also taking effect today.

This is an increase of 50 sen from the previous price of RM8.90 per kg.

Meanwhile, the new ceiling prices for chicken eggs in the peninsula are 45 sen each (grade A), 43 sen each (grade B) and 41 sen each (grade C). – July 1, 2022.
