TOP Umno leaders had gathered to work out a deal to get rid of Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as party president as early as 2020, according to Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.
The Pasir Salak MP said among the leaders present at the meeting held at his house in May 2020 were former prime minister Najib Razak, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan and Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
However, the plan fell through after Mohamad backed out.
Tajuddin said the former Negri Sembilan menteri besar was intimidated by Zahid.
“Who were the leaders? Tok Mat (Mohamad) and Najib. They asked me to survey the grassroots to see how many division heads agreed. If I’m not mistaken, 130 divisions that agreed.
“Tok Mat agreed, Najib agreed. Why did it not happen? Because Tok Mat is the leader who backed out,” he said at a press conference in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
Tajuddin addressed the media today after he was sacked last week as an Umno Supreme Council member.
Zahid last week said Tajuddin was axed due to his criticism of Umno.
Tajuddin was appointed to the Supreme Council after failing to become a vice-president in the party polls in 2018.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob recently appointed Tajuddin Malaysia’s ambassador to Indonesia.
Tajuddin alleged that Najib, or Bossku as he is popularly known in the party, had strayed from the group’s plan to remove Zahid by putting together a memorandum, which was to be endorsed by the division chiefs.
“Bossku agreed to help me, which was good because he has many followers. So we decided that Bossku was to call his followers to support our movement,” he said.
“Then he called his supporters for a session, where we listened to speeches. But then, the tone had changed. Instead of calling for Zahid to resign, they wanted to ask Bossku to be made Barisan Nasional chairman.
“But he (Najib) did not say anything. He was happy that people mooted him to be BN chairman.” – June 27, 2022.
