PASIR Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said he will not hesitate to contest as an independent to defend his seat if the Umno leadership does not field him in the 15th general election (GE15).
He said he will even consider PAS’ offer to give him a seat.
Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria made the offer after Tajuddin was dropped from the Umno Supreme Council last week.
“It can be considered. It is not a bad idea (to contest on a PAS ticket), but I am not interested in joining PAS,” Tajuddin told a press conference today.
“If they (Umno leadership) continue to act harshly against me, I can contest as an independent, but I will still support Umno.”
He said the Malay-based party still plays a big role in his life as he has been a part of it for more than 50 years.
“I am still an Umno member. I have been with the party for more than 50 years, and I love the party.
“Umno and I share a relationship akin to marriage. After being together for such
a long time, one should not just be discarded.”
Tajuddin first won the Pasir Salak parliamentary seat in 2004, and has been its lawmaker for four terms now.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last week said Tajuddin was axed due to his criticism of Umno.
Tajuddin is seen as a supporter of Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also prime minister.
The Zahid-led party leadership and Ismail Sabri do not see eye to eye on when GE15 should be held – the former wants it to be called soon, while the latter wants to wait until the economy has recovered.
The current parliament term will end in July next year. – June 27, 2022.
