PASIR Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should resign as he has become a liability to the party, just days after
the former was dropped from the Umno Supreme Council by the latter.
Umno will lose in the 15th general election (GE15) if Zahid, who is currently embroiled in corruption trials, continues to lead the party, he added.
“Zahid has become a liability. He cannot be the president or lead the party in the general election, or we will lose,” he told a press conference at the Eastin Hotel Kuala Lumpur today.
“Just ask the public, ask voters, ask Umno members… but many are not brave enough to say so. They are threatened to not talk much or will not be fielded as election candidates.”
Tajuddin held the press conference today to respond to his recent removal from the Umno Supreme Council.
Tajuddin said Zahid should focus on resolving his ongoing corruption trials.
“My suggestion to Zahid is: focus on your cases… you have many cases. You cannot possibly take care of Umno, which is a big party, and face the GE.”
It is better for him to focus on his cases, pray for the best and hope that there will be no more cases, he added.
“If the GE is called in the next two to three months, how can he focus on it? He has to go back and forth to court. Better to focus on his personal issues and not let the issues become a burden to Umno.”
Tajuddin was appointed to the supreme council after failing to become a vice-president in party polls in 2018.
Zahid last week said Tajuddin was axed due to his criticism of Umno.
But Tajuddin said Zahid influenced the rest of the supreme council to remove him.
“The supreme council sets party policies and decisions, supposedly for the betterment of the people and economy.
“But I feel troubled. There is no serious discussion on how to help the Malays. That is why we have been this way for 60 years.
“Hence, in the best interest of the party, it is time for Zahid to step down… if he loves the party and its struggle.”
