HEALTH Minister Khairy Jamaluddin met with several trainee doctors today at the Selayang Hospital in Kuala Lumpur to hear their grievances amid widespread allegations of bullying in public healthcare facilities.
Khairy said the trainees shared their experiences with him and recommendations for improvement to the workplace.
“Listening to the experiences of trainee doctors before they start their 6am rounds at Selayang Hospital,” Khairy tweeted.
“There shared many things with me. There are departments that have a good work environment while others need to be improved.”
Khairy said he does not want government hospitals to have a toxic work culture.
“The work environment must offer respect, support and be empowering instead of abusive and humiliating.”
He added that he will be announcing members of the independent task force which has been set up to look into the allegations of bullying.
“They have been given two months to look into the work culture in government hospitals and into allegations of bullying and make recommendations on how to improve the work culture.”
Last week, Khairy announced that a task force would be set up to look into the case of a trainee doctor who fell to his death in Penang.
He said the unit would also probe into alleged bullying among trainee doctors in government service.
Doctors told The Malaysian Insight bullying was the norm in public hospitals.
They said they wanted the task force to look into penalising those who bully, harass and intimidate trainee doctors. – May 13, 2022.
