TWO Sarawak Premier League football players and a suspected bookie have been remanded to help in a match fixing probe.
Defender Maswandi Zakaria, 29, midfielder Mohd Hafiz Abu Bakar, 28, and suspected bookie Mohamad Zaiman Rosli will spend the next six days in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) lock up in Kuching.
A Kuching Magistrate’s Court allowed MACC’s application to hold them in remand under section 16 (a) (A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.
The section states: Any person who by himself, or by or in conjunction with any other person – (a) corruptly solicits or receives or agrees to receive for himself or for any other person; or – (A) any person doing or forbearing to do anything in respect of any matter or transaction, actual or proposed or likely to take place commits an offence.
Magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng ordered the trio be reproduced in court on February 21 for re-mention.
The Football Association of Sarawak last Sunday opened an investigation after Sarawak let in a flurry of late goals to lose 3-2 in their home match against Felcra United a day earlier.
Sarawak were leading 2-0 and the defeat led to claims a number of players were involved in fixing matches.
Sarawak manager Wahab Abdul Rahim led the internal probe. – February 15, 2018.
