THE general manager of the Mulu Marriot Resort and Spa, Marc Cosyns, had to be flown to Miri hospital after a section of the wooden walkway at the resort collapsed.
The Belgian was among four men – one a German member of his staff and two employees of the timber giant Samling – who fell 4.5m to the ground below when the section they were inspecting for repairs gave way yesterday afternoon.
The German was reported to be the resort’s operations manager, Benjamin Wolff.
The Fire and Rescue Department said the general manager, who was flown to Miri in a helicopter, had injuries to his waist and right leg that required further treatment.
The department added that the other three men suffered minor bruises, who were treated by four members of its mountain and cave search and rescue team.
State Tourism,Creative Industry, Performing Arts Minister Abdul Karim Hamzah this afternoon described the incident as unfortunate but that “accidents do happen”.
He said the incident nevertheless illustrates the importance of maintaining tourism facilities by those in the industry. – April 27, 2022.
