THREE people were injured when a huge explosion rocked Sentul in Kuala Lumpur this evening when fireworks that were seized by police went up in smoke at a storage facility.
The explosion occurred at 6.15pm when a police team was disposing of fireworks that were seized in numerous raids in the district.
Batu member of Parliament P. Prabakaran, who visited the site, said the explosion, which could be heard in a 1km radius from the blast site, damaged a Punjabi school, several homes and shoplots.
The glass walls of Public Bank branch at nearby Sentul Boulevard were also shattered.
“According to the authorities, three people were sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for outpatient treatment,” Prabakaran said.

Fire and Rescue Department senior officer Ahmad Daniel Ahmad Kamal said the incident happened a storage area of 30m by 15m.
He said 30% of the structure was razed and about 80% of the surrounding area was damaged by the blast.
“Fifty vehicles were also damaged in the incident,” he said.
Prabakaran said vibrations caused by the explosion damaged several homes and buildings.
“Windows were shattered and the ceilings were damaged. There was also fireworks debris around the area,” he said.
“We have told the affected people to lodge police reports. We will then assess the damage and see what aid we can provide.”
He said the incident happened when the authorities were disposing of the RM4.1 million worth of fireworks that were seized recently.
Earlier, social media was abuzz with videos of the incident showing smoke billowing from the buildings.
The sound of fireworks going off was also heard around the vicinity.
