FORMER student activist Adam Adli Abd Halim has announced that he will be running for PKR Youth chief in the party polls next month.
He will go against fellow ex-student activist Fahmi Zainol, who made a similar announcement last week.
Adam Adli, 32, said he will be teaming up with Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, who will be running for deputy PKR Youth chief.
The pair have dubbed themselves the Seangkatan Team.
Adam Adli in a statement today said: “We humbly confirm our intention to contest the PKR Youth chief and deputy chief positions”.
He said there will be three Youth vice-chief candidates and 20 Youth exco candidates in his team.
These candidates will be announced at a later date, he added.
Adam Adli joined PKR on September 16 last year, with 20 other youth activists.
He previously told The Malaysian Insight that his priority in politics is to champion free tertiary education for all Malaysians.
He has had numerous brushes with the law for speaking on issues that affect students and ordinary citizens.
While there are concerns that free education may impact the economy, he said this does not mean that the agenda should be removed completely.
Free tertiary education was part of Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto in the 14th general election (GE14) – a promise former education minister Maszlee Malik said would be implemented before the next GE.
In 2014, Adam Adli was sentenced to a year in jail for sedition in relation to a speech he made at a post-election forum, where he urged the people to take to the streets to protest the widely contested election results.
However, he was acquitted of the charge in 2018. – March 30, 2022.
