KUALA Nerus MP Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali has resigned from the party with immediate effect following a string of dissent with the party leadership.

He announced his resignation at a press conference in Parliament this afternoon, saying that he had tendered his resignation letter to PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.

Khairuddin, who was former plantation industries and commodity minister, will now be an independent MP in Dewan Rakyat.

In January, The Malaysian Insight reported that Khairuddin was expelled from the PAS central committee for violating party rules.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, however, would not reveal what offence the Kuala Nerus MP had committed.

Asked whether Khairuddin was removed for holding closed-door discussions with other party leaders, the president did not answer.

The discussions are understood to be linked to efforts to strengthen Muafakat Nasional and defend Perikatan Nasional.

Khairuddin was then removed from his position as secretary of the PAS Syura Council not too long after he lost his post as PAS central committee member.

The Malaysian Insight also reported that the decision was made in a management committee meeting, which was also confirmed by Hadi.

Khairuddin was appointed to the committee along with two others, Nik Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz and Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki, last November after losing in elections at the muktamar.

Khairuddin was previously linked to an audio recording containing a speech criticising Hadi’s leadership as party president.

The speech, among others, raised concerns about Hadi’s stance on the issue of seat negotiations with Umno and Bersatu.

In February, it was reported that Khairuddin was sacked from two posts in PAS over accumulated issues that had angered Hadi, party sources said.

One was his association with a political and Islamic movement activist whom Hadi considered an Umno agent.

Khairuddin did not only fail to heed warnings against associating with the activist, but had even taken him on a trip to Istanbul in December to attend a conference on Palestine. – March 14, 2022.
