HANG Tuah Jaya lawmaker Shamsul Iskandar has challenged Putrajaya to set a fixed date for the general election (GE) to be held every five years.
He urged the government to amend the Federal Constitution to incorporate the fixed date for the election every five years.
“Amend the constitution and fix a date, so that the GE will be held every five years and not anytime earlier.”
“Not matter what happens, the term is five years for GE to be held and not for Parliament to be dissolved sooner,” he said during the debate on the royal address in Dewan Rakyat today.
The PKR lawmaker said he was raising the matter as he concerned with the vast amount of funds being used for state elections.
“The issue now is the cost of having state elections.
The focus should be to help the rakyat affected by the Covid-19 pandemic; to help people who are affected by the economy; to assist youth who are affected in the last two years to start businesses.
“Instead, the funds are being spent in other places (elections).”
He was referring to the March 12 Johor elections.
Sabah and Malacca have also held snap polls. – March 7, 2022.
