SARAWAK is targeting the arrival of 1.2 million visitors this year, which can generate RM3.2 billion in revenue in the form of tourism receipts, said state Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He said the number of visitors to Sarawak has increased fivefold compared with last year and the situation will continue if the Covid-19 pandemic eases this year.
“Before Covid-19, the number of visitors reached 4.5 million people. Give us another one or two years more to soar to that figure,” he told reporters after chairing the Sarawak Tourism Steering Committee meeting in Kuching today.
According to him, the agreement between Malaysia and Brunei to establish a vaccinated travel lane recently would be able to contribute to the increase in the number of visitors to Sarawak after the border between the two countries was closed last year.
“We also encourage visitors from Singapore as there are Singaporeans who have been applying for the Sarawak-Malaysia My Second Home programme. We also target the arrival of visitors from the peninsula,” he added. – Bernama, February 22, 2022.
