HOME Minister Hamzah Zainudin has confirmed the arrest of former high commissioner of Bangladesh Mohamed Khairuzzaman.
He said the arrest was made due to an offence committed by Mohamed and a request for extradition by his home country.
“The arrest was made according to procedures.
“According to the law, if there is an offense, we will arrest,” said Hamzah in a press conference today, reported Astro Awani.
Earlier today, sources told The Malaysian Insight that Mohamed was arrested yesterday morning, and will be deported to Bangladesh. The Immigration Department assisted in the arrest.
The Bangladesh High Commission has declined to comment.
The Immigration Department, Bukit Aman and Wisma Putra have not responded to queries.
Mohamed was appointed Bangladesh’s high commissioner to Malaysia in 2007.
The Bangladeshi government revoked his passport in January 2009 and recalled him to Dhaka to face a criminal trial over a 1975 political assassination.
The 70-year-old retired army major was previously acquitted of that charge.
According to Bangladesh media reports, Mohamed had sought help from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Kuala Lumpur, fearing for his life after the revocation of his passport.
Since then, he has been living as a refugee in Malaysia. – February 10, 2022.
