A MAN under detention for drug possession at a police station in Klang is the latest to die while in police custody.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department director Azri Ahmad said the 35-year-old was found unconscious at 6.50am at the Pandamaran police station.

He said the man was declared dead at 7.30am and the cause of death has yet to be established.

Azri said the suspect was on a three-day remand and was being investigated under section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“He was initially arrested on Tuesday. We will investigate the death,” Azri said in a statement.

The latest case comes a day after a detainee at the Penor Prison in Kuantan died after complaining of chest pain.

Azri said the 38-year-old detainee was brought to the Indera Mahkota centralised lockup last Tuesday to attend a drug hearing today.

Subsequently, the hospital informed police the detainee had died from tuberculosis.

Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin recently said there were 82 deaths in custody reported between 2015 and November last year.

The victims were 42 Malays, 13 Chinese, 15 Indians and 12 foreigners. – February 4, 2022.
