PARLIAMENT will not discuss the Azam Baki debacle as it is not on the agenda in the special sitting today, Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun said.

“Although, I have received the motions (to debate the Azam Baki controversy) the business of the day has already been set by the government under Standing Orders 11 (3).

“As I have not received any new instructions, I have no power to change this and we will continue with the set agenda,” Azhar told Dewan Rakyat after the matter was raised by several opposition MPs.

Among those who raised the issue were Salahuddin Ayob (Pulai-PH), Nga Kor Ming (Teluk Intan-PH) and Gobind Singh Deo (Puchong-PH).

In the run-up to today’s session, Nga and Salahuddin had submitted emergency motions to debate the Azam controversy where the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief had admitted to letting his brother use his share trading account to acquire shares.

The issue was raised after it was revealed that Azam had owned 2,156,000 warrants in Excel Force Bhd as of March 21, 2016.

At the time, Azam was the head of MACC’s investigation division.

The Securities Commission (SC) on Tuesday said it was “not able to conclusively establish” whether the MACC chief commissioner had breached the law in allowing his trading account to be used by his brother for shares purchased in 2015 and 2016.

Yesterday, however, the SC clarified its statement to say that no one but Azam owned and used his share account, disputing the anti-graft agency chief commissioner’s claim that his brother had used it.

Following that, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the SC’s decision on Azam’s trading account should be accepted by all parties.

Earlier, Azhar said that today’s special sitting would begin with Ismail briefing Parliament about the flood situation in the country.

This would be followed by briefings by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions) Abdul Latiff Ahmad (Mersing), Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (Kubang Kerian-PN).

Latiff will brief Parliament on flood relief measures while Tengku Zafrul will talk about financial aid given out to flood victims. Tuan Ibrahim give a rundown on long-term flood mitigation plans.

“After that, MPs will be allowed to pose questions to the government and the ministers will reply after that.

“There will be no breaks today to allow as many MPs as possible to take part in the debates,” said Azhar.

The special sitting is being conducted after floods wreaked havoc in the country on the weekend of December 18-19 last year. The floods have claimed 54 lives while two people are still missing.

Selangor recorded the highest number of deaths, at 25, followed by Pahang (21), Kelantan (4), Sabah (3) and Negri Sembilan (1). – January 20, 2022.
