PKR is negotiating for state seats in Selangor based on its ability to win them and believes it should contest the most seats, says party vice-president Dr Xavier Jayakumar.
He said since Selangor Menteri Besar and PKR deputy-president Azmin Ali was leading the charge in the state, the party should be given priority on the seats.
“There are some parties that say they also want the same seats but PKR is holding firm that we are the government here and the MB is from our party so we expect to lead in Selangor.
“We contested 21 seats in the last election. We are looking at it from the angle of winnability. The majority of the seats will be contested by PKR,” Xavier said at a Ponggal celebration today.
He said the party also wanted to contest seats they had previously lost despite several objections from PH parties.
It was previously reported that there was some confusion with seat negotiations for PH Selangor as PKR was the only component party that insisted formal negotiations had started.
PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin issued a statement on Friday denying Amanah’s claim that a committee had yet to be formed to discuss seat negotiations.
She said four rounds of talks had already been held by the state PH elections committee, headed by Xavier.
However, Amanah and DAP Selangor chairman Tony Pua said he had no idea talks had been ongoing.
Bersatu Selangor chief Abdul Rashid Asari, meanwhile, said that they would be interested in seats previously contested by Umno.
“We, Bersatu, are focused on Umno seats,” he said, adding that negotiations were ongoing and that he expected Bersatu to contest at least 12 state seats in the next election.
“We may ask for 12 seats and a few more. Maybe it can be negotiated with Amanah,” Rashid said.
In the last general election, PKR contested 21 seats and won 14, including former menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim’s Ijok state seat. – February 4, 2018.
