FORMER Sarawak attorney-general Fong Joo Chung will be leading the special task force to look into the allegations made by former attorney-general Tommy Thomas in his biography, said Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

In a statement, the parliament and law minister said the police will also investigate the matter.

The allegations in the book My Story: Justice in the Wilderness include abuse of power in the appointment of judges, alleged interference of the executive body in the judicial system and claims of selective prosecution.

“The legal affairs division, the Prime Minister’s Department and the Attorney General’s Chambers will act as the secretariat for the committee,” he said in the statement.

Wan Junaidi said there will also be other special officers in the task force, including former Sabah state secretary Hashim Pijan, former director of the legal affairs division Junaidah Kamaruddin, former judge and AGC senior federal counsel Jagjit Singh and representatives from ministries.

“The task force will submit its findings and recommendations within six months from the date of appointment as decided by the Cabinet on October 29,” he said.

Thomas released his book earlier this year, drawing criticism for his bombshell revelations of behind-the-scenes manoeuvrings in the judicial system.

Among the issues discussed in the book are the 1Malaysia Development Bhd case and its prosecution, as well as the troubles Thomas faced in the AGC and his controversial appointment as a non-Malay AG.

Thomas also touched on the process of prosecuting former prime minister Najib Razak, the competence of prosecution officers handling the case, the murder of Mongolian interpreter Altantuya Shaariibuu that implicated Najib, and the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government. – December 8, 2021.
