A VOTING centre was closed for disinfection after a voter in Alor Gajah tested positive for Covid-19, state health director Dr Rusdi Abd Rahman said today.

He said the Alor Gajah department of health received a notification from the Melekek Covid-19 assessment centre that a voter tested positive for the coronavirus.

“The test result for the individual was received from a private laboratory after the voter has voted in the state elections,” he said in a statement.

“The health department has informed the Election Commission at the relevant voting centre to close down the high-risk voting stream for disinfection.”

The EC had taken immediate steps to open a new room for voting, with new equipment, he said.

The Alor Gajah health department along with the fire department was involved in the disinfection of the voting centre.

“We view this matter seriously and investigations are underway. All close contacts are being investigated by the health department,” said Rusdi.

Voting for the Malacca elections ended at 5.30pm and the counting of ballots is underway, with full results for all 28 seats expected late tonight.

The polls were held after four assemblymen withdrew their support for Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali last month, leading to the dissolution of the legislative assembly. – November 20, 2021.
