ALL new development projects in Penang will have to install water savings devices (WSDs) once the authorities amend building by-laws this year.
Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief executive officer Jaseni Maidinsa said the devices will allow consumers to automatically save water without changing their daily routines and habits.
They have proven effective as PBAPP had been using them at its buildings since 2012.
“We found WSDs helped reduce water use by between 14% to 87%,” he told a press conference at PBA’s office in Komtar today
WSDs regulate water flow and water consumption. They include taps and shower heads with flow regulators, toilet cisterns with dual flush systems that enable 3 litre “half flushes” and 6 litre “full flushes”, and water saving urinals with timers or spring triggers.
“WSDs have been acknowledged as one of the most effective ways to conserve water worldwide. Countries like Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Britain and the US also promote WSDs actively,” he said.
Penang uses the most water in the country. Its per capita domestic consumption in 2016 was 286 litres per day, compared to the national average of 209 litres per capital per day.
Jaseni said the decision reflected the state’s commitment towards its no-water rationing policy and water-saving efforts.
“It will have a huge impact on water conservation in a water-stressed state.”
The Penang Island City Council and the Seberang Prai Municipal Council will enforce the new regulation after it is gazetted.
The state government and PBAPP have been working on efficient water management and promoting water conservation through awareness programmes as well as a water surcharge for domestic consumers who record high water consumption. – January 30, 2018.
