FORMER Malacca chief minister Idris Haron will be contesting under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner in the Malacca polls, Anwar Ibrahim said today.

The former Umno man has been given the Asahan state seat under the Alor Gajah constituency.

He was one of the four assemblymen who had caused the collapse of the state government after withdrawing support for the Umno-led administration.

PH chairman Anwar said there has been criticism by political leaders questioning the motives of the assemblymen who had defected.

“We are contesting as a team. This is not happening with the parties that are in government. If we want political stability, it can only be provided by PH.

“This is Malacca PH’s negotiations with those (former assemblymen) who had come over because they felt that the Malacca Umno-led government was not right,” he said at a press conference.

He also said that former Umno assemblyman Nor Azman Hassan will contest in the Pantai Kundor state seat.

The PKR president said that Idris and Nor Azman have been accepted as PKR and Amanah members respectively.

He added that former Malacca chief minister Adly Zahari from Amanah would be leading the PH charge in the polls.

However, he said that the candidate for the chief minister’s post has yet to be determined.

The giving of seats for both Idris and Nor Azman has resulted in the youth-based party Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) staying out of the Malacca elections after not being able to reach an understanding with PH.

Its founder Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said the decision was made after PH leaders were adamant to give the two former Umno reps seats in the polls.

“There was a positive signal at the beginning of our negotiations but in the end, unfortunately, PH leaders were eager to let some Umno defectors who had caused the collapse of the Malacca government to contest under their banner.

“Muda is against PH accepting these political frogs because for us, integrity is above all, including seats.

“Therefore, Muda chooses to not continue the negotiation and stay out of the elections in Malacca,” he said.

On October 5, four assemblymen announced they had withdrawn support for the Malacca government led by Sulaiman Md Ali, which saw the dissolution of the state assembly, paving the way for the polls.

The Election Commission has set November 8 for nomination day, while polls will be held on November 20.

The four assemblymen were Idris (Sg Udang), Nor Azman (Pantai Kundor), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu).
