THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained a 60-year-old contractor as a graft probe into railway contracts deepened in Sabah.
The man is the fifth suspect detained in the investigation into the awarding of non-existent projects between 2012 and 2017.
The man was held on Saturday evening after being questioned by MACC.
He is now being remanded for five days today by Magistrate Cindy McJuce Balitus as MACC moved to freeze his accounts.
Some RM1.6 million in cash was seized from the contractor’s house after MACC raided it last week.
On January 22, MACC detained the Sabah Railway Department’s acting deputy director, two senior government engineers aged 37 and 39, and a 42-year-old contractor in connection with the probe.
Their remand orders, which expire today, have been extended for another three days today.
MACC said it has since frozen around RM5.3 million in accounts in several banks, while MACC obtained caveats on several properties belonging to the suspects.
The houses were, valued around RM2.7 million, are n Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Johor. – January 28, 2018.
