UMNO has nominated Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Mohd Nor to fill the Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker post, said party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

Ahmad in a tweet today said: “The prime minister and Umno president have agreed to nominate Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Mohd Nor for the deputy speaker post.”

“This marks a moment in history, as he is the first Orang Asli to be nominated for the post.”

The second deputy speaker post was left vacant following the resignation of Azalina Othman Said on August 23.

Azalina had said she hopes that her resignation will provide an opportunity for the government and opposition to “reset” during the Dewan Rakyat sitting last month.

Ahmad was named as a potential candidate to replace Azalina, but withdrew his name last week to concentrate on his work as Umno secretary-general.

Meanwhile, Pakatan Harapan (PH) has nominated Teluk Intan MP Nga Kor Ming as its choice of deputy speaker. Nga held the post during the 22 months that PH was in government.

This is the last day to nominate a candidate before Parliament reconvenes on October 25. – October 11, 2021.
