PUTRAJAYA is still waiting to hear Deputy Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah’s views before deciding whether to propose an emergency in Malacca to pause impending polls, said Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

A meeting will be held between the deputy Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, Attorney-General’s Chambers, Health Ministry and Election Commission, he added.

“The briefing will be held in the coming days. Once it is done, the cabinet will make a decision next week,” he told the media, after attending the soft launch of Keluarga Malaysia at the Angkasapuri building in Kuala Lumpur today.

Ismail Sabri said the cabinet had met earlier today, but made no decision on an emergency for Malacca.

The Malacca Legislative Assembly was dissolved on Tuesday, after four assemblymen pulled their support for Chief Minister Sulaiman Md Ali the day before.

Speaker Abd Rauf Yusoh announced the dissolution, saying it is on the advice of Sulaiman to the Malacca governor.

An election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of any state assembly.

However, there have been calls for the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong to intervene and an emergency to be declared in the state to suspend the polls in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. – October 8, 2021.
