8,817 new Covid-19 cases logged today

Health authorities say a total of 8,817 new Covid-19 cases have been detected in the last 24 hours. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, October 5, 2021.

THE Health Ministry today reported 8,817 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, said director general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The latest figure in a slight increase from yesterday’s 8,075 cases.

The latest statistics bring the cumulative number of infections to 2,294,457. 

Three states today recorded four-figure new cases – Sarawak (1,361 cases), Selangor (1,348) and Kelantan (1,063). 

Other states reporting new Covid-19 cases today are Sabah (805), Johor (886), Kuala Lumpur (217), Kedah (576), Penang (595),  Negri Sembilan (122), Perak (473), Malacca (246), Pahang (696), Terengganu (356), Putrajaya (23) and Perlis (47). 

The region with the lowest case count is Labuan with only three infections.

Earlier today, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said 88% of the country’s adult population is fully vaccinated and there is only another 2% to go before interstate travel is allowed. 

He also said that after 90% of the adult population is vaccinated, Malaysians will no longer need to apply for the MyTravelPass to go abroad.

According to the Health Ministry’s CovidNow website, 221,812 vaccine doses were administered as part of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme yesterday, of which 126,433 were first doses and 95,379 second shots.

A total of 44,573,891 doses have been dispensed under the programme since it started on February 24. – October 5, 2021.
