OLYMPIC and Paralympic Games medallists are given the same rewards, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Ti Lian Ker told the Dewan Rakyat today.

“The rewards are the same whereby a gold medallist will be given RM1 million, RM 300,000 for silver and RM100, 000 for bronze,” he said referring to sporting events with less than five in a team.

For team sizes greater than five members, each person will receive RM150,000 for gold, RM40,000 each for silver and RM20,000 per person for bronze.

“So, there is no difference,” the senator said in response to a question from Larry Sng (Julau-Ind) on whether the performance of the Malaysian athletes in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games reached the expected target and the rewards to be given to athletes who win medals.

Ti said the national athletes were only able to compete in 27 events during the qualifiers due to Covid-19 and training in quarantine since June 2020 was another challenge for athletes.

He said the Youth and Sports Ministry has also set up a committee chaired by the secretary-general, to evaluate athletes’ performance at the games. – October 4, 2021.
