Covid death toll passes 24,000

THE Covid-19 toll reached 24,078 with 334 new reports of deaths as of 11.59pm yesterday, data from the Health Ministry show.

Four deaths took place yesterday while 330 others were backlog cases that were previously unreported, said the Git.hub portal.

Eighty-four of the cases were pronounced dead on arrival.

The daily death figure is the sum total of the number of deaths that occurred on the day plus backlog reports of deaths, or deaths that have just been confirmed by the health authorities to be due to Covid-19.

Selangor reported 187 deaths – up from 130 the previous day – 55 of which were pronounced dead on arrival.

Johor logged 37 deaths, Kelantan (20), Kuala Lumpur (18), Sabah (14), Perak (12), Sarawak (10), Kedah (8) Pahang (7), Penang (7), Terengganu (6), Malacca (3) and Negri Sembilan (5)

Only Johor and Pahang reported deaths that occurred on the day yesterday with one and three cases, respectively.

Labuan, Putrajaya and Perlis did not report any fatalities linked to the coronavirus.

The national average was 6.2 deaths per population of 100,000. The average was highest in Penang at 16 deaths per population of 100,000.

Meanwhile, 15,759 new Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday for a cumulative caseload of 2,127,934.

According to the CovidNow website, there are 206,473 active cases in the country, with 172,868 patients in home quarantine, 21,890 in low-risk quarantine centres, and 105,999 in hospitals. Among the last group of patients, 1,116 are in intensive care, 635 of them on ventilator support. – September 22, 2021.

  • The real number might be much higher as Malaysia seems to be counting Covid deaths differently from other countries and WHO guidelines. Perhaps something that TMI can look into.
